ParadeRest serves the military population of Central Virginia including active duty and retired military personnel and their families. Our mission is to demonstrate the community’s tremendous gratitude for their service and sacrifice by recognizing and supporting the area’s ‘hidden military’ personnel and their loved ones who are not stationed near large bases. Our objective is to develop and implement integrated outreach and support programs prior to their deployment, while they are away, and when they return home.
Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc.™ is dedicated to the physical and emotional rehabilitation of disabled active military service personnel and disabled veterans through fly fishing and associated activities including education and outings.
FlyDog Yoga is a Veteran-owned yoga studio that offers a variety of Veteran Programs, including a complimentary Warrior-For-Life Yoga series for Veterans.
Hosted by 890th Cadet Wing of the University of Virginia Air Force ROTC the Honoring our Heroes 5K is an event to recognize our country’s military members who have served and sacrificed for our country. The run is typically held in November.
The Freedom 5K is an event celebrating family, fitness, and freedom. The run is typically held in December and benefits local and regional military & veteran non-profits. In 2016, the run proceeds benefited Parade Rest, No Greater Sacrifice, and Blue Star Families of Central Virginia.
On April 23rd, 2013, 1LT RJ Hess was killed in the service of his country in Pul-E-Alam, Afghanistan. 1LT Hess was a graduate of the University of Virginia Army ROTC program and was respected as a genuine leader by his peers. In memory of 1LT Hess, UVa Army ROTC established the 1LT Hess Leadership Award and Scholarship, which will be presented annually to a Fourth Year Cadet who embodies the attributes of moral courage, integrity, and selfless service. By participating in the RJ Hess Memorial 5k, you can show your support for and help develop the future generations of the U.S. Army’s leaders. The run is held annually in April.
The 4 The Wounded 5K is an annual event hosted by the UVA Foundation at the UVA Research Park to benefit wounded warriors and military veterans. The inaugural event was held in 2011 and over six years the event has raised more than $600,000 for Wounded Warrior Project and local and regional military/veteran non-profits. The run is held annually in June.
